An open-source online only game? The least I'd expect them to do is make an offline mode, but nothing so much as to provide the source. Do that and it turns into shit.

It won't happen, especially since GW2 is supposedly run on a heavily modified version of the GW1 engine.

Agreed. No way it will happen.

A major reason why most commercial games don't end up open-source is because they include a 'middleware' solution that is not an open-source license.

In regards to GW, GW2: I don't see the benefit in making it open-source? It's a tightly controlled system that I don't see being compatible with a community approach.

lol, of course it won't, why should it? Because OP wants it to?

ANet have produced a brilliant game engine, much of which will presumably be carried over to GW2, that has real value to the company.

I would say no for one reason, look at the genre for all open source games. They are all games that focus on a single goal, mostly FPS and a few strategy but all have the same principle, kill the other side before they kill you.

This might correlate with the pvp portion of GW but when it comes to the game as a whole, no server network on earth could support a mass of plugins geared towards every aspect of PvE quests, missions, elite areas, items, game physics, etc. that would flood from 4 million+ users.

Not to mention with the removal of instanced individual servers in GW2 who would try and tackle the daunting task of code checking every upload in real time to see that no conflicting source codes were implemented causing anything from gross exploits to "world" wide crashes.

It would be great in theory but it's the same reason why ES: Oblivion online was 6 feet under before it ever even got out of the rumor stage.

Not much of a grand discussion here because it simply won't happen.

And your reasons for resurrecting a 9-month-old thread are...?

XDDDDD

No. Never.

Maybe they'll release the source with another Anet game as an CE extra. But that would be after Windows 10.

Why open source it seems you all want the keys to the kingdom.
It can be closed source. with some keys to the kingdom but so few that it doesn't in danger anything about World of Guildcraft 2.
